Genetic Code of the Vineyard

This document describes the Genetic Code of the Vineyard and is made up out of ten points. This Genetic Code gives the characteristics that have been there since the beginning of the Vineyard ‘seed’. It describes what the Vineyard stands for, what she does en where her every (future) ministry needs to fit into. We don’t expect that every Vineyard has fully developed all ten points, but all points need to be there in one way or another.

  1. The Bible – the Word of God

The Bible is central in our teaching, faith and life. We want to hear the Word of God taught in a practical, inspiring way. We aim to hear and obey God’s word to us, and to be “doers of the Word” who are being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

  1. Worship

Worship is our highest priority. We desire Spirit-enabled worship in a style that is intimate, dynamic, culture-current, life-changing, and non-manipulative. We desire to worship God with our whole being, with everything in us, and with Jesus as the centre of our worship. We are hungry to know God’s presence, hear His voice, obey and follow hard after Jesus.

  1. Small groups

The small groups are the basic structure of the Church; the place where you feel home, where you belong, where relationships can develop, the place of self-disclosure, growth, discipleship and practice of ministry.

  1. Spiritual gifts

Spiritual gifts are in every believer – they are to be identified, evoked and exercised for the common good. We must be more gift-based than organisational-based.

  1. Training

Training is fundamental to our being Church – to ‘equip the saints’ for the work of ministry in all its aspects, and also for life itself. We believe that all Christians should be trained to “do the works of Christ.” We are committed to the “show and tell” model of on-the-job training, in which trainees are introduced to doing ministry functions with trainers and then are taught during and after the training experience. We aim to provide training for all aspects of responsible Christian life and ministry.

  1. Signs and wonders

Signs and wonders are a normal and regular part of Church life – to practise the ministry of compassion and power in terms of healing the sick and broken, driving out demons and doing the supernatural works of God.

  1. Ministry to the poor

We believe that God’s heart goes out to the weak, helpless, impoverished, oppressed, and needy, and that He has commissioned His church to care for them. Therefore the ministry to the poorshould be a regular practice of mercy in terms of feeding, clothing, helping, serving, etc.

  1. Evangelism

Evangelism is the call of every believer – to bring others to Christ through friendships, power encounter, and other programmes of outreach. Real Church growth means reaching out into the world and advancing the Kingdom of God.

  1. Other churches – the practicing of Christian unity and serving other parts of the Body

We are convinced that all who belong to Christ are one in His Body, the Church. We love the broader church and seek to have good relationships with other churches. We aim to maintain unity by honouring all who call on Jesus’ name and by seeking reconciliation with all parts of the Church. We desire to serve the Body of Christ around us through renewal, equipping and other helpful means.

  1. Missions and church planting

We believe that the best way to expand the Kingdom of God is through the planting of local churches. This is at the heart of the Vineyard calling.Every Church must have a vision to grow and multiply and to touch other parts of the world.
